How would you perform the role of Truffaldino to make the audience laugh?

  1. I would play Truffaldino in this extract very dry. The "deadpan" style of this would give him a stronger appeal to the audience. Laughter would then be achieved because I would be playing him as a very serious character who feels he is well respected, yet completely oblivious to his foolish nature. Especially in his encounter with Pantaloon, where he is trying to impress Smeraldina and Pantaloon keeps interrupting. Not only would this make the audience laugh but it would make him a more charming character, due to this he would become more endearing and likable. Whereas an exaggerated and over the top performance could potentially convey an obnoxious nature of his character, which could cause the comedy to deflate from the performance.
